Hearne says: "Elbert Craton, son of Stephen and Jane (Ballard) Hearne, born in Coweta Co., Ga., June 1, 1827. Moved to Louisiana in 1856. From there be moved to Arkansas. He died 1887. He was a preacher in the Methodist Protestant church. Married Harriet Baker 1845. Children: Titus, born 1847 married Eliza Wilburn 1865. Their children are Olla, Thomas, James, Craton; Nora, born 1865; Lucy, born 1870, married Dr. James Jordan."

But indeed the 1900 census tells a different story. It was Lenora who married Dr. Jordan.

William (Billy) Waller Hearn, Jr.
A resident of Athens, GA

William (Billy) Waller Hearn,Jr., 69, died Wednesday, July 13. Billy was born June 22, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA to the late William (Tiny) Waller Hearn, Sr. and Stella (Nanai) Weglicki Hearn. Billy grew up in Eatonton, GA, home of his father. Billy graduated from Putman County High School with honors in 1954, also having starred in fdootball, basketball and baseball. Recruited by several major colleges, he turned down an offer to play professional baseball and attended the University of Georgia. His stellar career at UGA included being named Most Valuable Offensive Back of the football team of 1956, being the leading pitcher of the baseball team and lettering in basketball as well. He was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society, G-Club, Blue Key, and Sigma Nu Fraternity. Also, while at the U of Georgia, he met and married Elaine Holliman of Toomsboro, GA, who survives hm after 48 years of marriage. Upon retirement from Southern Waistband, Billy enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. Billy was a lifetime member of the Barrow County Historical Society, Member of the Friends of Piedmont Regional Library, served 10 years as a City Councilman for the city of Winder, was a founding member and First Sr. Warden and Lay Reader at St. Anthony's Episcopal Church.

In addition to his mother, also surviving are son, William Tracy Waller Hearn, III of Winder, and son-in-law and daughter, Chip and Tammy Hearn Walker of Eatonton; grandchildren, Christopher Michael Walker, Holliman Elaine Walker, and Bret Anderson Walker, and William Tracy Hearn of Bogart; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Carlton Hearn Collis, and Don Collis of Eatonton, and Margaret Hearn Murchison of Flowery Branch, and many nieces and nephews.

Puzzle: is Rosa Pepper really Rosa Herdman?

My puzzle of the week is I'm trying to verify the adult identity of Rosa Pepper, daughter of Clarence Hearne Pepper and Minerva W Richards. In my previous blog entry, I list the record for Rosa as a child, living with her parents in 1910. I also show that in 1930, Clarence and Minerva are living in the same building as boarders with a Roland and Rosa Herdman. Rosa is exactly the right age. That would normally be proof enough for me.

However, if you look closely, Rosa Herdman's 1930 census says she was born in Pennsylvania, and her parents were too. That doesn't fit. Normally I would chalk something like that up to an error. But the proposed parents are living in the same building! Further there is no evidence that Clarence and Minerva ever left the Delaware/Maryland area.

The LDS new.familysearch (NFS) records provide a full name and birthdate for the daughter of Clarence and Minerva: Rose Minerva Pepper, born 17 Jun 1897. The birthdate from NFS cites their source as an extraction record. But I can't interpret it.

The Social Security Index provides information on Rosa Herdman and she has the same birth date, 17 Jun 1897 (see below). Normally that would be great proof, but it doesn't really address the birth place in the Census.

The 1900 census is no help. The family is living in Sussex (if they ever lived in Pennsylvania) and Rosa's birthplace (and her parents) is listed as Delaware. And the birth date is January, not June. This muddies the extraction record.

Can someone help me solve this puzzle? I'm looking for another piece of evidence that shows Rosa Herdman is Rosa M Pepper. Here are the kinds of evidence that would be adequate proof.

1. A marriage record of Roland Herdman and Rosa M Pepper. It will be about 1917, because Rosa said she was 20 when she got married and we know she was born in 1897.

2. Some other record of Rose M Pepper being born in Pennsylvania, preferably with her parents there too. Maybe a 1900 census of the family, which I've been unable to find.

3. A birth record of Rose M Pepper or other record that shows her birth year and month (and preferably day and place) Look in Chester Pennsylvania.

4. Any other record that shows Clarence H and Minerva Pepper lived in Pennsylvania at the time of Rosa's birth.

5. A clear view of 1920 census for the state of birth of Rosa Herdman and parents' birth. I have a poor copy of the 1920 census, and that part of the page is obscured by a blemish, which looks like a ink stain or tape stain. If this census shows that Rosa Herdman was born in Delaware, then it really looks like the 1930 census was wacky for some reason.

6. An obituary that ties these families together.

The family is easy to find in 1850 and 1860, but become a little less certain in 1870 and 1880.

The above family is not found anywhere else in 1870, the following seems to be the best candidate. The initials of the children match up , but the ages are as much as 4 years off. The birth order holds. This family below is not found in Atlanta in 1860, so I conclude it is our Priscilla.

Yesterday, I received a most interesting letter from a Jamie Goldman. Here are some excerpts:

"Jerusha Hearne was my Great Great Grandmother. (Page 604, 610, 611) She was the daughter of Drewry Hearne & Keren H Bledsoe. She was married to John M Goleman/Goldman, (in some records and on the tombstones it is spelled Goleman.) Jerusha & John's son Arthur L Goleman, married to Carrie Polatty, had a son named John Curtis Goldman, who married Flora Marie Pitts, who had 13 children...one of whom is my father, Joseph E Goldman Sr.

"There are Goleman's and Goldman's in this line....John M was GOLEMAN, his son Arthur L GOLEMAN, his son Ransom GOLEMAN, & Ransoms brother & my Grandfather John Curtis GOLDMAN. Some of Arthur's children spelled it GOLEMAN and others GOLDMAN. We have not determined why the spelling was changed, but do know that at some point it was.

"I have photos of Jerusha's tombstone, which is located in Saluda SC at Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Also buried there is her daughter Florence Goleman & her husband who was JO McDowell, & their daughter Janie 'Ola' McDowell & her husband who was Caleb Sidney Mitchell. Some of their children are buried there as well. I have photos of these stones also, as well as Arthur L Goleman & Carrie Polatty Goleman's, & others.

**Please note that Jerusha's tombstone says: 'Jerusha Hearne, wife of John M Goleman Born July 16, 1824 Died Feb 28, 1904'**"

It is interesting to note in the Census that the names do seem to change from Goleman to Goldman.

Heron and Hearon in Blount, Tennessee

There are no Hearnes in Blount Tennessee. But there are a lot of Herons in 1880 and the same families seem to be Hearons in 1900. The name Hearne has always had many derivative spellings. I've always thought it to be something about the way people tried to pronounce the "e" on the end of the name made it sound enough like an extra syllable. Something about Tennessee seems to have given a new angle on the Hearn name.

The 1880 Tennessee Blount 8-Dist page 159 has James (1842) and Margaret (1846) Heron. They are next door to Jeremiah (1844) and Docia (1854) Heron. Each family has a Rachel. That seems telling.

The LDS new.familysearch.org suggests the Whitehead spouse of Jeremiah Hearn, son of John W Hearn and Annie Chesney, was Rachael. It also lists her children as named Hearon.

The same James and Jerry are there in 1870, in District 8 (Maryville) page 154, also next to Tom (1840) and Mariah (1840) . Surprise! Tom has a Rachel, too! And they're living next to Sam Whitehead (1840) and Tom Whitehead (1830). Sam has a Rachel! Tom has a Rachel! They live next door to Tom Whitehead (1810).

In 1900, James and Jerry and Tom are named Hearon. Tennessee, Blount, 3-Dist, page 101-102.

Looking for leads on these, and specific information that ties these Hearons to Rachel Whitehead and that she is the Whitehead who married our Jeremiah Hearne. Although the circumstantial information seems pretty strong.

Henry Hearne Lockhart and wife Sarah Richardson

I found this elusive family in Kentucky, which is where I would have expected them if I'd read carefully. Hearne, pg 715, say he was born in Ireland in 1800. Immigrated to New York with family in 1807. Moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1819 and lived there a few years and then moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he was actively engaged in farming and dealing in fine stock for over thirty years.

This is what Hearne says about Septemus and Julia Freeman: "...Septimus F., born 1862, died 1910... Septimus Freeman married Miss Julia Pound in 1886. Children: Zilla May, born 1887; Loree, born 1890 and Adron, born 1893. Mr. Freeman died in 1911 and his widow lives in Atlanta, Ga.." (Hearne, Addenda, 1912, p 787, 788)

Septemus and Julia settled in Georgia back in Indian Springs. They are found there in the 1900 census. Julia is indeed found as a widow in Atlanta. But there is also a record for a living Septemus remarried to an Agnes in 1910.

So, which is it? Hearne says that Septemus died in 1910. So is this another Septemus in 1920? That happens to be on a second marriage with a son from a first marriage Adrian? Seems unlikely. Perhaps Julia told people she was widowed, not wishing to point out she was divorced?

I received a comment from "jsl" which pointed out the following:

W. T. Hearne on page 791 states:

"Mary Louise Hearne, daughter of Francis Sharpe Hearne, Sr., married a Mr. Swan, and they had one daughter, Louisa, who married a Mr. Clapp, and moved to Texas. "

I agree with this. Looking at the information, there is more circumstantial evidence that boosts this conclusion.

First, the suggestion already has a lot going for it because of the approximate age of Louisa, and the Georgia birth. Here is some additional information.

There is no family Swan in Georgia with a child Louisa. However, our Mary Louisa Swan, age 10, is living with her aunt and uncle, Sarah Hearne and Jos. Freeman, Indian Springs, Butts, Georgia in 1860. This must be our Swan, else why a Swan living with the Freemans? So Mary Louisa's parents appear to have died.

Mary Louisa is not living with the Freemans in 1870. She would have been 20, based on the 1860 census. Hearne says she married a Clapp and moved to Texas. There is a Lu Clapp married to William Clapp, age 20, born in Georgia in 1870, in 4th Precinct. Houston County, Alabama PO. They have one daughter.

Received a letter today from a nice person who said they came from Hazel Elaine Hearne (1910) the daughter of James Caldwell and Ludella Beatrice (Brown) Hearne. After a little looking, I am quite mystified. I can't find any evidence of this family, let alone this previously unknown (to me) daughter, in either the 1910 or 1920 Louisiana Census.

You'll see in the attached comments that Lyon's Den has found this family in the 1910 census. Thanks! Lyon's Den interpret's Morris's name as Harris. I still like Morris. Look at the following snippets from 1920 and 1920 census. Even though the 1910 census is a poor image, you can see that the first letter of Morris/Harris is not the same as the first letter of Hazel. It is therefore not an H. I conclude that Morris is a better reading, especially after seeing the more clear 1920 census.

The 1900 census helps us because it confirms there were 8 children.

The 1910 census helps us confirm Palace's gender. The name Palace is used for men and women. The 1900 doesn't help much by calling Palace a daughter. The 1910 census is much stronger evidence because it lists a wife and a son of same name. This together with the 1880 census leads to a firm conclusion that Palace was male, and the 1900 census is incorrect on this.

It has been hard to determine exactly what happened to Mary Laura Meek and her husband Richard Brinkerhoff.

Their marriage as well as Richard's first name is documented in Miscellaneous Marriage Records, B, transcribed by Cheryl Chebow.

BRINKERHOFF, HARMAN R. [married] MEEK, MARY L. [on] 24 FEB 1867"

The LDS IGI has a record that Mary L Meek died in 1868, and is buried in the Meek Oakview Cemetery in Vincennes. That was not in the email I was sent. I'll have to investigate.

The 1870 Census has a strange entry for Richard Brinkerhoff. 1870 Census, Iowa, Lee, Des Moines, Vincennes, p 45 has the following record for Richard, just two households away from Johnson and Priscilla Meek:

This census entry is clearly the Brinkerhoff identified by Hearn on page 86, but the age of Mary is not right if it is Mary Louise the daughter of Johnson and Priscilla Meek. However, if his wife died in childbirth in 1868 and the daughter lived, she would be the right age. Hearne refers to the child as Louise, but because the mother's name was Mary Louise, it is reasonable that the child is also named Mary Louise. This is my current active theory.

With four adult children past 40 in the home still single, it seems that they may never have married. Two children died before their teens. It begs the question if there are any descendants beyond this generation.

We know that in 1930, Robert B, Edward, Ricka and Joseph were single. Each of these is also found in the Meek Oakland Cemetery at Vincennes. Ricka's stone has her maiden name, although no death date. (I need to check this personally). Happy and Abel, who died young, are also buried there.

That leaves only Meeker and Clyde.

Meeker and Joseph are found in the Social Security index. (See previous post.)

In Meeker's case, we know he died in 1966, so was living in 1930 and in the county, but not living at home. He is not found in 1930 Lee County Census, but he is found in Wyoming in 1920 Census. It is both his age, unusual name and the his birth state and parents signature birth state combination that make it clear it is our Meeker. Doesn't look very hopeful for descendants.

That leaves Clyde as the main hope for descendants. Because he is not buried at Vincennes with the rest of the family, it suggests he moved away. Searches in other indexes have turned up nothing. I've searched the Social Security index, and 1920 census.

There is a Clyde E Ryan in 1920 Nebraska, Keith, Vial, page 32, family 234. He is the right age, born in Iowa, but his Mother is listed with a Virginia birth. I conclude this is too much of a leap.

From the 1900 Census, we can see R.B.'s wife is Mary A, but his mother-in-law is Eliza J Allen, widowed from Ohio, father from Ohio, and mother from Pennsylvania. We can conclude this is the right Mary A., and her full name is Mary Alice. Mary Alice is born in Iowa, but her father is from Kentucky, and her mother is from Ohio.

In the 1880 census there is a family that fits this perfectly. Note the name, birth date and place, and parent birth places match for both Eliza J Allen and the daughter Mary Alice.

Got a letter from Grady Ellis, who has information about this family from an Ellis Family Bible. She says, "William Robert Ellis born on Jan 9, 1868, and died on Mar. 09, 1887... William was a minister. Their children were: William Ellis, Alfred Lee Ellis, Gardner L. Ellis, Eunice E. Ellis."

This family is mentioned in Hearne's book on page 53:
"Martin L., son of Isaac and Eleanor Hearne, born 1808, lived in Laurel, Del., and died 1873; he married Sarah Ellis, 1833; she was born 1814 and is now living (1894). Their children are: Ellen, Louisa, Emily, Eunice, Lucy, Martin L., Frank, Edgar. Ellen born 1835, married Rev. W. R. Ellis; children: Lee, Gardiner, William and Eunice."

Ancestry.com has their new collection of military records on line for free until June 6. Hard to identify people with just initials, but this one is clear:

Foster A. Hearn from the 12th Tennessee Infantry, captured at Shelbyville Tennesse, Jun 30, 1863, died Camp Morton Oct 17, 1863, cause of death (see below). This would almost certainly be Foster Hearne born 1842, the son of Wilson A Hearne and Sarah "Sally" Baird, of Wilson Tennesee. Source: "Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War, 1861-1865", Ancesty.com, page 34590, page 146 Foster is buried in Section 32 of Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana. There are actually two death records. One does not list his death, but the other says it was "Fetris Remitten". "Sickness and Death in the Old South" defines remitten fever as malaria. A medical friend tells me that Fetris is latin for fever. So Fetris Remitten would be be malaria.

West Virginia Hearnes and Shumates

I have always thought that Bud Shumate, listed on 596 in the book, and who married Aura Elizabeth Hearn (Daughter of Andrew & Martha) probably had another name (i.e. Bud was a family name or nickname). Especially as I cannot find anyone named "Bud" Shumate in the 1900 or 1910 census. As I recall, the Hearne book lists them as having had 2 children, Lula May and Guy, before Aura Elizabeth died in 1895.

Interestingly enough I find in the 1910 census, one Harvey M. Shumate with grandchildren Lena, age 14 and Guy, age 12, living in Mercer County, West Virginia (1910 WV Census, Mercer County, Plymouth, ED #134, Dwelling #193, Family #197). I am wondering if these 2 children could be Aura's children and if Harvey Shumate could be "Bud's" father. In the 1900 census, Harvey doesn't have these 2 grandchildren enumerated with him, but he does have a widowed son Henderson. Guy Shumate's age doesn't match with the recorded death information for Aura Elizabeth, though.

Returning to the 1910 census, searching for Henderson, I find him in the same ED (Dwelling #161, Family #165), listed as married twice, with second marriage of duration 9 years. The 4 children listed in the household appear to be of ages to only be those born in the second marriage (which is reported as 4 born/4 living). (Note that Henderson is of an age to have been married to Aura Elizabeth Hearn.)

There is a Guy E Shumate age 22 enumerated in Roanoke, VA in the 1920 census (which matches a birth year of 1898 that a Guy Earl Shumate reported in the WW1 draft registration, living in Mercer County WV). He lists occupation as a pipe fitter for the railroad and has presumed wife Leona (both are listed as "lodgers" in the Walter Draper household (Roanoke Highland Ward 2, ED #31, Dwelling #478, Family #584).

I tried search the WV death index for Guy and Henderson Shumate but neither appears there.

Sarah, Charles' wife will give birth to Roscoe in 6 weeks. Charles AA Hearn will die in five months. Isaac Wilber Hearn will marry in two months and then will die in four months. What an emotional roller coaster for this family.

New format at the Hearne History site

I'm trying something new with the addition of new information from Betty Crockford on page 478 of Hearne's History.
For the first time, I've included content directly into the History.

Prior to this, I've always left Hearne's original text exactly as it was, putting all new content only in the Notes sections at the bottom of each page. The original thought was Hearne's text was priceless in its original form. Perhaps also was the question whether our facts were better than his. It seemed a little presumptive to just change his content.

After doing research over the years it's clear there are many errors and omissions in his text. More than once, now, I've been bitten by typos in the text, searching for names that aren't real because they aren't spelled correctly. Initially I struggled with even changing these spelling errors. Even though they were wrong, it felt like I was somehow altering a canonical work.

Yet, Hearne's book is not a bible, rather, it is a collection of facts and stories. His purpose was first to gather the family into one, then inspire the upcoming generations with evidence of a noble heritage. Neither of those purposes is lost by adding new information. Indeed, Hearne himself was constantly adding new information. He published a second edition of the book. He published and addendum with hundreds of new names. Had he not died, I suspect he would have produced another addendum in 10 years.

The question is not whether the corrections should be noted; that is already done via footnotes. They question is whether they should be corrected in-line, directly in the text. After consideration, I think it is a good way to go. The modern additions are clearly identified. The original pages are available for view any time. What's more, I think Hearne would have wanted it that way.

Here are some examples of changes, both the old and the new way:

A page done the new way with in-line corrections is page 478.

Rachel Drewrey Hearne and Henry C. Irby

Betty Crockford, a descendant of Rachel Drewrey Hearne and Henry C. Irby has sent information about them, and their descendants. This and supporting documentation has been integrated into the original information on page 478 of Hearne's History.

Some other notes from Betty:

A note regarding Henry C. Irby whom Rachel Drewry Hearn married in 1855 (I have a copy of their license.) Just this week I found a notation that an H. C. Irby married a P. J. Reeves in 1878 in Hopkins County, TX. If validated would be the first reference past the 1870 Texas census. Other descendants of his second marriage have run into brick walls along with me. Also note I have never found any evidence that Henry served in the Civil War, although his first cousin, also called H. C. Irby, served as a Captain from Fayette Co., Tennessee. The two are frequently confused in various databases.

There has also been confusion concerning Sallie L. Irby Hopkins' death reported as 1929 in Harris Co., TX. I obtained the death certificate for that Sally Hopkins and it is not "my" Sallie who goes missing after 1880, Lamar Co., TX.

Breckinridge Tremaine

The oldest son of William C and Lillias (Kenney) Tremaine is Breckinridge Tremaine. Fascinating name because it's so unusual. Yet searches across records have found nothing about him.

There are a couple of records that are interesting and may be our Breckinridge Tremaine.

A search of the Internet turns up this interesting tidbit. The only Breckinridge Tremaine in any Internet search I can find is the following out-of-print book.

B K Tremaine died in Lee County, Florida, 4 Nov 1984, aged 79. He was born 25 May 1905.

I'm pretty certain that B K Tremaine of Lee, Florida is the author above. I just don't know if he is the Breckinrigde we're looking for.

There is also a Social Security Death Index record, which is the same as the death record above.

The birth date is close. Really close and useful. The other census records show our Breckinridges ages as:

1910: 4 (b. ca. 1906; census taken April 19, 1910)
1920: 14 (b. ca. 1906; census taken Jan 17, 1920)
1930: 24 (b. ca. 1906; census taken April 4, 1930)

In each of those, a May 1905 birth date would correctly have an age of 4, 14, and 14 in the respective year. I'm 95% sure it's the same person. I just need some way to confirm, either by birth place (Vermont), or relative's name.

8/20/2007 Found some more information on Breckinridge:
PATENT: Breckinridge Kenney Tremaine of Wilmington, Delware was granted US 2,462,341 "Cleaning Composition for Rust Stained Lacquered Surfaces" on 22 Feb 1949. This patent tells us his location on September 24, 1946. He was working for DuPont, who is the assignee of the patent.

Finding the Tremaine children led me back to their Grandfather, Richard Rolland Kenney. I knew he was a Senator from Delaware based on reading Hearne History 185-187. What I didn't realize was how much information on the web would be available based on this, as well as images.

Senator Kenney has his own Wikipedia article, except it doesn't mention anything about his family. I think I'll add a few facts to Wikipedia. He's in the official list of Senators from Delaware, Political Graveyard, and a Congressional Biographical site.

There's lot's more information out there on this family.

Here is the family in the 1900 census. His first wife, Harriet (Pennewill) is still living. She died in 1907.

Richard [Jr's] birth makes the birth year of Lillias clear. Hearne says Lillias was born Aug 28, 1883. But from the grave stone, Richard Jr.'s birth is Dec 23, 1883. That's too close. Gravestones are a pretty good source. The 1900 census also lists the birth year as Aug 1882. That is consistent with Richard's birth, and the parents' wedding date of Dec 21, 1881. I conclude the birth is correctly Aug 28, 1882.

William and Lillias (Kenney) Tremaine

I've been going nuts trying to find William Sremain, who married Lillias Kenney (Hearne History page 187). The name didn't show up anywhere in any census. A little luck and the the unusual name of the son, Breckinridge, led me to them living in New York in 1920. Sremain is a typo; the real name of the family is Tremaine. There are other identifying aspects of this family. William was stationed at Fort Ethan Allen near Burlington Vermont. The census shows that Richard was born in Vermont.

Ha! If I'd paid attention I would have noticed that Hearne corrected the name in the 1912 Addendum to his book on page 766. I guess it shows my logic was correct. "Page 187. On March 3, 1908, Richard Rolland Kenney, married Miss Marionetta Walker, who was a girl friend of his first wife, and of same age, also Sremain, should be Tremain."

I also found Breckinridge and Richard in the 1930 census, but they are living with their grandparents, Senator Richard Rolland Kenney and Marianita (Walker) Kenney. Wow! Look at the size of that stately house. Twice as big as the next biggest house on the block!

William and Lillias seem absent in the 1930 census. Why? Perhaps both of them died between 1920 and 1930, or perhaps the children lived with grandparents during the depression.

James B. Hearn Sr. shared with me this great drawing of the Hearn(e) coat of arms.

It matches the symbols described by the research William T. Hearne had done.

This is the interpretation of the heraldry:

The shield is described as sable (sa.) or black, and it is the field, or ground, on which the armorial bearings are grouped. Some are red, gold or silver. Rothschild is red shield and is pronounced ‘Rote-shild.’ ‘A chevron’ means a bar whose width is one-fifth the length of the shield, the ornamentation of which is ‘ermine.’ This, you know, is the fur lining, or trimming, of royal robes, and of a judge’s robe, in the higher courts of Great Britain, The ermine itself is supposed to be spotless, symbolizing the purity of justice, but the ornaments on it are intended to stand for the tips of the tails of the little animals whose skins make the valuable lining in question, the whole fur except these tips being a pure white. ‘Between three herons argent’ means between three silver herons. Argent is French for silver. The crest which ornaments the top is the neck and head of a heron, resting on the usual support, a banded bar, or perhaps a striped cushion; in this case the bands are gold and silver (‘or’ and argent’). The heron’s head ‘ducallv gorged’ means that the throat, or ‘gorge,’ of the heron is ornamented with a ducal coronet. 'Ppr.' (proper) means its own natural color, gold, with red lining. The motto signifies: ‘He maintains the laws and his rights.’ The 'chevron' is really two bars meeting in the center of the shield like rafters in a roof, and resting on the base of the shield. I will not venture to decide on the significance of these emblems, but I think they must point back to some member of the Hearne family who was a duke and of royal lineage, or he may have won the title by his services on the bench. The heron I take to be a symbol of courage and devotion.(History, page 25)

Will of Jonathan A Hearn, b. 1812

James Hearn also provided me a transcript of the will of Jonathan A Hearn of Sussex, born 1812. The will lists his wife, Frances S. Hearn, and his six children: Job S., Elijah R., Alfred W., Stephen G., Mary E., and Martha A. Will dated 3 Sep 1894.

"He stipulates that he set up the cemetery there for the purpose of buring relatives and friends of the family. He also arranged for his wife, Frances S., himself and Patrick, his son to have tombs erected for themselves, but not necessarly there. As a matter of fact they are burial in Cemetery #81 at Laurel. The dates on the stones there agree with the 1870 census of him and his family..." (James Hearn)

James Hearn sent me an annotated listing of the Hearn related tombstones in the cemetery on the Bloxom Daugerty Farm in Sussex Delaware. This listing is updated and corrected from an original publication in The Maryland and Delaware Genealogist, Vol. VIII, No. 1, January 1967 & Vol. VIII, No. 2, April 1967. He also sent several images. I've added links from the tombstone listing to the images. You can see the complete listing with image links here. James Hearn notes:

This cemetery is where the parents of Jonathan Alfred Hearn, previously owner of the farm there, are buried and was set aside as a burial ground for the purpose of burying relative and friends of the family in 1884 by Jonathan when he died in that year. It's all stated in his will. Ref:RG 4545.009, roll #107, Jonathan A. Hearn 1884-1885.

This cemetery is located approximately 1-1 1/4 miles north of Delmar on the road from Delmar to Laurel. It is currently surrounded by farming equipment in the center of which is a group of small trees where the cemetery is located. It is 1/4 acre, as stipulated in Jonathan's will.

James Hearne wrote and sent some photos of historical Hearne sites in Maryland. He sent images from 30 years ago and today. Interesting for comparison.

Here is the Hearne cemetery near Delmar Maryland. (Map) About 1973 (above) and 2006 (below).

Here is the marker that W. T. Hearne erected in 1895 near the old church. James writes:

"...pictures taken of the old church where Wm. T. Hearne, the author, placed a monument across the road indicating the location of his ancestor, Ebenezer Hearne. The church which in 1973 supposedly had the old phews in there was opened to the public once a year to visitors. Now it appears to be in use as a home, since there has been a picket fence installed around the church and there are curtains and shades at the windows.
"The monument William T. Hearne installed across the road is still in good shape but the ground around it is continuing to erode away as you can see by the picture. I am afraid in a few more years it will tumble over."

Ledger Images of the Merchant William Hearne

James B. Hearn sent me a link to research about a branch of the Hearn(e) family from Maryland, researched by Jay Hearn, of Avoca, New York.

At the site, Jay documents information about Samuel Batson Hearne, born 28 Jan 1841, the son of Kendal Batson and Elizabeth (Hearn) Hearn of Littel Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Deleware. The place and timing means it is definately a descendant of William Hearne, the merchant. However, I can't quite tie them into the lines that are in Hearne History. I sent a letter to Jay for more information.

The biggest treat on the site is scanned images of the Day Book (or Ledger) of William Hearne the merchant. One of which I've linked in on the left. You'll have to visit the site to see the others.

I'll post more when I hear from Jay.

Elizabeth Jane Hearne 1822-1874.

Exchanged the following correspondence with Pat Condray about her Hearne Lines which seem to connect through a mysterious Elizabeth Jane Hearne 1822-1874:

I had a chance to read through the Hearne Book at a Library in Salisbury MD a couple of summers ago, and since then have pulled it up on the internet. Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate any record in it of an ancestress. Her name was Elizabeth Jane Hearne Bates, and she was my great great grandmother on my father's side.

A genealogical work about the "Descendants of Benjamin Boydston Condray" traces our ancestress to the William Hearne of England who died in 1691 in Somerset County Maryland, obviously the same patriarch as described in the Hearne Book. The line proceeds through Thomas Hearne (1691 posthumous?-1762, Thomas Hearne 1720-1800, Reverend Stephen Hearne 1748-? Reverend Thomas Hearne 1786-1857, married Frances Wilson, daughter Elizabeth Jane Hearne 1822-1874 married Reverend James Bates 1821-1878. Their daughter Martha Jane married Benjamin Boydston Condray, and they travelled to Faulkner County Arkansas in a train led by Reverend James Bates in 1871. Martha Jane Bates Condray died in 1911 and was followed by her husband Benjamin in 1921.They had ten children including my grandfather.

I don't know whether I missed it in the bulk of the book or what. But I didn't find any Bates in your index. Clearly the lineage identified in our book is clearly to the same original immigrant.

Did I miss it? Or did Elizabeth Jane fall out of the history somehow?

Pat,

Thank you so much for your letter. This does appear to be a line that's missing from the book. Hearne was dependent on other people to provide his detail. He only did research on his own direct lines (that I am aware of). Let's you and I figure it out, together.

In the book, we have Rev. Stephen Hearne (1748-1844) of Montgomery, NC. That fits your information. (Hearne pp. 468, 561, 576, 579) One of the children of Rev. Stephen Hearne and Prudence Coggin Steed is Thomas Hearne (Hearne, Pages 576,577,579) He was "A physician and Methodist preacher. They moved to Elbert Co., Ga in 1826." He married, according to Hearne, (1) Mrs Elizabeth Richardson Salter in 1808 and (2) Frances E (Winfrey) Williams in 1828.

Here is where your records and Hearne's diverge. There is no marriage to Frances Wilson.

There is a record of a daughter, Jane E. Hearne, born 1809 to Thomas and Elizabeth Richardson Salter Hearne. That *could* be your Elizabeth Jane Hearne 1822-1874.

Or maybe there is a third marriage. Because Elizabeth Salter died in 1817, there is a 10 year gap where there could have been a third marriage. It is in this gap that your Elizabeth Jane Hearne was born in 1822. Do you have any sources that would indicate that there is a third marriage?

Perhaps Frances Wilson is the same as Frances E Winfrey Williams? There is a daughter named Prudence Eliza Ann Catherine Hearne. However things fall quickly apart. Even though her middle name is close, Prudence E married a Verdel, and she was born in 1829. So she is not a good match.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this, especially about a third marriage.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I don't have any direct
source of information on the marriages of Reverend Thomas Hearne. He is
listed in the ancestry of Elizabeth Jane Hearne Bates as being the son of
Reverend Stephen Hearne and Prudence Steed Hearne, born 3-25-1786, died
1-25-1857. Elizabeth Jane, as reported, born 4-3-1822, died 4-18-1874. She
married Reverend James Bates, who was born in 1821. They had a daughter (my
great grandmother) Martha Jane who was born in 1842 and married Benjamin
Boydston Condray.

There does seem to be room for a third marriage on the part of Reverend
Thomas Hearne, and Elizabeth Jane follows the family tradition by marrying
a Methodist Minister. But the middle years of Thomas Hearne's marital
career remain a mystery.

Edmond Martin Hearne

I receive this week the following additional details from John A Hearn, of Wake Forest, North Carolina. It refers to several individuals on Hearne's History page 616.

1. Edmond M. Hearne (son of Edmond Hearne) was my great grandfather. His full name was Edmond Martin Hearne. He was called Martin by his son (Zeb Vance Hearn - here is where our family dropped the "e"). Edmond Martin Hearne died about 1900 of "the bloody flux". He is buried at Northam Cemetery, in Rockingham, Richmond County, NC. Source of this info Zeb Vance Hearn as told to me, John A. Hearn.

2. Edmond Martin Hearne could not read or write as evidenced by his X mark on his marriage certificate. His wife was Sallie Elizabeth Liles. Edmond Martin Hearne operated a dray for hire, hauling freight, in the town of Rockingham, Richmond County, NC.

3. Laura J. Hearne (daughter of Edmond Hearne and sister to Edmond Martin Hearne) had the middle name of Jane. She and her sister Sophronia (nickname Froney) remained single for many years and lived in the house of their father Edmond Hearne, near Wadeville, NC, after his death. My grandfather Zeb Vance Hearn knew both of these women when he was a young man. He referred to Laura as Laura Jane. He called them "old maids", but said one of them [apparently Sophronia] married late in life. So this means that your note about Laura V. Hearn who died as a child, possibly being the same person as Laura J. Hearne, is incorrect. Source of this info Zeb Vance Hearn as told to me, John A. Hearn. I have the original paper will of Edmond Hearne, father of Sophronia, Laura Jane, Edmond Martin, etc.

4. George W. Hearne (son of Edmond Hearne and brother to Edmond Martin Hearne and Laura Jane Hearne) had the middle name of Washington. He is buried in a cemetery north of Rockingham, Richmond County, NC, but it is not at Northam Cemetery where his brother Edmond martin Hearne is buried. I was at his well marked grave about 30 years ago but cannot now locate the cemetery. He and his wife never had any children of their own, but adopted a boy, or had a young boy living in their home. George Washington Hearne owned a large farm on the north side of Rockingham, NC. Source of this info Zeb Vance Hearne as told to me, John A. Hearn. I found his will which says he left the farm to the Methodist Orhanage in Raleigh, NC. I have a photo of George W. Hearne in front of his home with the small boy, but George's face is very small in the photo because it has the whole house width.

Last living descendant of W.T. Hearne: James Noel

Out of the blue last week, I got a call from Kathy Smith, a local Historical expert from Lee's Summit, Missouri. Through her historical work, she had the acquaintence of James Noel (pronounced Nowl, rhymes with bowl), who is the remaining living direct descendant of W.T. Hearne, author of Hearne History, who died about 1913 .

I was able to talk to Jim on the phone. He is now 90, but clear in thought and nimble of wit. He has a good memory for facts, and many binders of notes. He has W.T. Hearne's original notes for the book, as well as the copper plates from the original printing. Handed down through the family are many heirlooms, including jewelry and one of the original chairs from the family's dining set from England.

Jim's aunt was Maggie Barkley Lee, the daughter of Fannie S. Hearne and Dr. J. C. Lee. Fannie was the daughter of William T. Hearne, the author of the book.

Maggie Barkley Lee married James Noel, had a son Lee Noel. He had no survivors; no children. Lee inherited the W.T. Hearne house in Independence. The house was donated to the truman heritage foundation.

James' brother is Forrest Noel, who married Jean Stribling. This is Jim's father.

Here are some other notes from my discussion:

"Aunt Mag stayed in Lee's summit until 1914. Ms. Lee and Aunt Mag Hearne lived in Uncle William's house, and moved in with them in 1917, with Lee opened up a savings and loan and insurance business. Mag and son Lee living in the house. Uncle Jim died about 1963, son Lee died about 1967-8, Aunt Mag Noel died about 1967.

"The family came to Lee's summit about 1870, and started buying land, bought by the Unity Church. A 20 story tower, Mag Hearne and Aunt . His first wife, her mother in laws farm bought by state of State of Kentucky where they built the State capital of KY and the Unity Tower.

"When the Hearne family cam to virginia about 1680, the family had a furniture buisness in london, and had shipped over a dining room set mhogany and 8 leather upholtered chairs. Somebody has the other chairs. Around page 130 something, there's a reference to the table and chairs.

"Granddad bought land from Alexander Majors, who created the pony express. He bought that farm out of bankruptcy in 1887. James Noel lived and worked on that pony express farm, 48 years with state of Missouri." (Note: Kathy Smith says the pony express did not actually pass through the farm.)

I'm sure Jim would be delighted to hear from you. He thinks nobody cares about Hearne's anymore:
